The Artist's Path Article in Textile Fibre Forum Magazine

I was approached by Janet De Boer, the dynamic force behind Textile Fibre Forum magazine, to write an article on my experiences participating in the Hill End residency and international residency in Halifax, Nova Scotia Canada last year.

I wrote about how I went about achieving a successful crowd funding initiative to cover the travel costs to Canada, provided some tips on participating in and what to expect during a residency, as well as writing about the work created for the residencies. The result was a three page article that has just been published in the September edition of Textile Fibre Forum magazine.

Click on the images for a legible version of the article.

Participating in the two residencies last year created a different path for my art career. Keeping an open mind and getting out of my comfort zone led to new opportunities and possibilities. I have been swept in directions that I would not have dreamed possible a year ago and I have met so many fabulous people along the way.

The career of an artist has many twists and turns, all of which are made possible with a curious mind and tenacity of spirit. Who knows where it will take me next?

A big thank you to Janet and her team for including me in the magazine. X

Feature article in Canberra Potter's Society Newsletter

Earlier this year I was interviewed by Kathryn Wells for the Canberra Potter's Society (CPS) newsletter.

I used to have one of the lovely studios at CPS which has a lovely views and great facilities. It also has one of the most friendly and supportive environments an artist could wish to be involved with. Ill see if I can dig out some images of my studio and its surroundings to share with you.

The article talks about the similarities and differences between the residencies, challenges I encountered, what I gained from the experiences and how it has progressed by work.

As seen in House & Garden

Late last year I was invited to include my wares in a photo shoot for House & Garden. So I obligingly sent them some of my current works including tea towels, ceramics and constructed textile pieces.

I have been hanging around news agents and surreptitiously flicking through magazines waiting in anticipation for this issue to appear on the shelves.

My carved ceramic cup is on the right hand side behind the lemon juicer.

To my delight they included my work on two pages: my ceramics (above) and almost an entire page to my constructed textiles (below).  Click on the images for a larger version of the image.

The results were fantastic and I am very flattered to have my work photographed alongside other artists who I greatly admire.

A big thank you to everyone who was involved in the photoshoot.

Centenary of Canberra - Legacy of Good design article

Yesterday the program was launched for next year's celebrations of Canberra's 100th birthday at the Canberra Theatre.

Behind a large plywood 100 structure resting on the steps of the theatre, amidst the song and dance routines, the Canberra memorabilia products were launched.

To coincide with the launch a double page spread appeared in September's Art Monthly magazine. The five designs, which until now have been kept secret, have been revealed.

Featured in Womans Day

I was flicking through Womans Day (as you do) after a little bird told me that my Paris Balcony Heart cushion was featured in The Style File....

And here it is

You can buy the Paris Heart Cushion online at Blue Caravan - an online site which supports and promotes direct trade with emerging and independent designers. They insist on ethical production both locally and overseas, and love fairtrade or sweat-free certification. Blue Caravan believe that objects ‘warmed’ bydesigners, artists and artisans have aquality like no other… and that ‘ethical’is no longer a choice separated fromstyle and design.

My kinda thinking too :)

Wow!

I was flicking through the latest publication of the Design Institute of Australia and discovered an article on the Interwoven Exhibition I participated in earlier this year. To my delight the large image is of my screen printed fabric covered tea pots.

How very cool :)

A big thanks to Pip Wilkinson for organising the exhibition and article.

Canberra Times Review

How marvelous!

My Shibori Silk Stole was mentioned by the esteemed Canberran art critic, Sasha Grishin.

"Kate Ward's Pomegranate, 2011, a sik shibori stole, is another work which holds attention and has its own sense of presence."

Featured in Style

The lovely ladies at Style Magazine, the essential lifestyle guide for rural and regional NSW, made the journey to visit us at the Handmade Markets, Canberra in June this year.

They dropped by to say hi - and it was lovely to meet them face to face after communicating by email....

I think they might've had a lot of fun discovering all the lovely handmade things at the markets :)

They even published a picture of my cushions (bottom of page 55).

Green Walnut Liquor & Winter Sunshine

At the beginning of this year I decided to make some green walnut liquor. I had been inspired by an Italian interior designer I met whilst I was working in London who told me the process involved in making it. It involved picking the green fruit on a certain day of the year (St Johns Day June 24, the equivalent to our December 24), the fermentation process which required moving the fruit steeped in liquor so that it sat on a window sill that got the morning light, and then moved to another window sill to absorb the afternoon light. This was to be done for 40 nights and 40 days - before adding a sugar syrup and setting it to rest for 6 months.

I could just envisage a jar of the green walnut liquor sitting on a window sill in Tuscany and was romanced by the idea. Plus the liquor is so fragrant and exotic, I simply had to try making some. Mum just happens to have a walnut tree in her back yard which provides the most beautiful dappled shade in summer.

Picking the green walnuts using one of my recycled plastic bag crochet baskets to gather the fruit.

The green walnuts soaking in vodka with cinnamon and lemon.

After 40 days and 40 nights the walnuts turn black.

The finished liquor.

Making the most of the sunshine in my kitchen (and a partially restored cabinet - rescued from the side of the road).

My kitchen gets the most glorious sunshine on winter days, so I decided to make the most of its warmth yesterday by finishing the green walnut liquor which had been languishing, neglected on the top of my fridge for a number of months. It tastes pretty good already, Im looking forward to sharing it with friends and family.

Well, thats one project Ive finished which I can cross of my list. You'll be pleased to know that Ive almost finished the thrice knitted jumper - it just needs to be sewn together.

If you would like the recipe for green walnut liquor click here for an article which was published earlier this year in the Canberra Times Food and Wine section. It also has a recipe for Cherry Plum jam which is also incredibly delicious.

Enjoy! x

Inspiration in the Kitchen

Susan Parsons, writer for the Canberra Times Food and Wine section, wrote a delightful article about my other passion - making jams and chutneys. The article includes recipes to make Oriental plum jam and Nocello (Italian green walnut liquor) - both are delicious!
